Do I need special permission to use famous artwork?
In the United States, the answer is usually “No” for artworks that are in the public domain. United States federal law has stipulated that exact reproductions of most famous artwork can’t be copyrighted (see the 1999 ruling in The Bridgman Art Library v. Corel Corporation). For locations outside the USA, please consult with your country’s copyright laws.
All the artwork available on this site is free of protective copyrights. You may freely use any images available for downloading. Also, many museums offer free downloads of many of their famous artworks that are in the public domain.
In the United States, a copyright is good for seventy years after the death of the artist. But more recent artworks may also be free of copyright protections, too.
Where can I obtain free artwork?
Visit the National Gallery of Art website, or any other famous museum, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Learn about each museum’s own policy for using downloadable images for use with Collabinart. The Met’s website alone has over 375,000 freely downloadable images from which to choose!
Another option is to visit a local art gallery, obtain permission to photograph famous artworks, then use your own images of famous artworks in your own Collabinart experiences.
Do I need special training to use Collabinart?
No, you do not need special training to use Collabinart. Anyone can view and interpret art. Toddlers and schoolchildren do this when reading picture books. You can do it, too.
